Lyme disease (LD) is contracted through the bite of a black-legged tick that is infected with Borrelia burgdorferi (B.Burgdorferi) bacteria also called Lyme borreliosis. Against many opinions LD to the contrary, LD is prevalent & very under diagnosed in Australia. Many of my clients have had to send their tests overseas to obtain a diagnosis. Early symptoms appear 3–30 days after the bite & include: flu-like symptoms, swollen lymph nodes, fever, chills, fatigue, & a bull’s-eye rash.

Within a month medical treatment may assist you, however in animal studies it has been shown that the current Lyme antibiotic treatment is unable to completely eradicate the Borrelia organism. As it tries to kill off this organism the little nodules on it break off like seeds & take on a cystic form. This may explain why 40% of people continue to suffer from symptoms of fatigue, brain fog, internal shaking, joint or musculoskeletal pain, neuropsychiatric symptoms, & a condition called post-treatment Lyme disease (PTLDS) syndrome.  PTLDS may involve autoimmunity, digestive issues, muscular skeletal conditions, neurological, persistent infection & the Spirochete bacteria has been found in people with Parkinson’s, MS, & dementia conditions.

After several days or months of infection, a person may experience: severe headaches, stiff neck, arthritis, severe pain & swelling in large joints, pain in tendons, muscles, bones, & joints, nerve pain, dizziness, shortness of breath, tingling, numbness, shooting pains in hands or feet or both, memory problems, irregular heart rhythms, inflammation in the brain & spinal cord, & facial palsy – which is a loss of muscle control in part of the face.

Dr. Zhang a researchers at Johns Hopkins, Bloomberg School of Public Health found essential oils derived from garlic, cloves, myrrh, thyme, cinnamon bark, cumin seeds, & eucalyptus were effective against the biofilm, the stationary phase B. burgdorferi, & killing the persister forms of LD. Research found that garlic bulbs, myrrh, & ginger lily completely eradicated all Lyme disease bacteria in 7 days, and no regrowth occurred in 21 days. At this stage, Dr Zhnag says that these essential oils look promising as treatments for persistent Lyme infection.

Preventative steps to avoid tick bites:
·         knowing which areas ticks are likely to inhabit
·         knowing the symptoms of LD – rash & fever
·         If bitten check immediately
·         using insect repellent on skin & clothes and wear tight protective clothes
·         checking for ticks regularly & remove ticks with fine-tipped tweezers
