Castor Oil is one of the oldest drugs, still used in conventional, complimentary & folk medicine. It’s made from the seeds of the
Castor plant & dates back to ancient Egypt; first used as lamp fuel then later in medicinal & beauty treatments. Cleopatra is said
to have used the oil to brighten the whites of her eyes. It is a thick, odourless oil &India is the largest producer of castor seeds,
& castor oil production worldwide. Castor Oil is considered safe & may be placed on the skin as a compresses, rubbed in or
taken orally. Due to its thick consistency it is not used in cooking or added to food.
Castor Oil is a good source of: Vitamin E, Omega-6 fatty acids & more than 90% of castor oil’s fatty acid content is
ricinoleic acid – Omega 9 – fatty acid. Omega-9 has an anti-inflammatory effect, assists with pain relief, & when applied to the
skin may help relieve joint pain, it has a laxative effect, good for menstrual pain & aids in inducing labour in pregnant females.
Castor Oil for the Eyes: – may be used to treat dry eyes, eyes that are painful, itching, burning, stinging, blepharitis,
inflammation of the eyelid & to reduce symptoms like eyelash matting by creating a film over the eyes.
A 2010 study published in the journal Contact Lens & Anterior Eye found an eye drop that contained castor oil helped to reduce
dry eyes by increasing thickness in the tear’s lipid layer.
A 2002 study published in the journal Ophthalmology studied the use of castor oil-containing eye drops in the treatment of
meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD).
Using Castor Oil may cause your eyes to become blurred, this will pass after a few minutes, & it will not damage your vision
Other healthy lifestyle choices to improve your dry eyes are:
? Use a humidifier to maintain moisture in the air
? Frequently break from computers, phone & digital TVs
? Every 20mins – stare away from electronic devices into the long-distance
? Close your eyes or blink frequently
? Wear glasses outdoors to protect your eyes from wind & dry air
? If you smoke STOP & avoid passive smoke
Put Castor oil into the eyes 2-3 times a day to reduce any eye conditions, once change has occurred reduce amounts and frequency
