Adverse Childhood Events

We are now moving into a powerful new time
To work on the baggage we’ve been dragging behind,
Now it is time for the work to be done,
Don’t let the past, dim the glow of the sun.
Write down your feelings and experience the pain
Then day after day you will feel what you’ve gained,
You have the strength you lived through the strife,
You have the fortitude to regain your new life.
No one can stop you, just open up wide
The work that you do will become your clear guide,
Out with the old, the sad and tormented
Forward we charge forging paths of contentment.
Choose to be happy, let go of the rage
Choose to live now and commence a new page,
Each day is a wonder, each hurt we release
Is a moment of joy and a future of peace

In 1996 researchers linked childhood stress to adult illness
According to Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE’s) studies – the rougher your childhood, the higher your risk for health problems in adult years.

ACEs – are traumatic events that can have negative, lasting effects on health and well-being; ranging from physical, emotional or sexual abuse, parental divorce, parent going to prison, abuse, neglect, household dysfunction, unhealed childhood trauma, bullying, hospitalisation, witnessing a violent death, traumatic birth, financial crisis, homelessness, natural disasters, living with depressed or alcoholic parents, feeling insecure and unsupported and feeling humiliated and unsafe in the family structure.

ACE’s leads to a chronic state of “fight, flight or freeze” and researchers at Yale University showed that when inflammatory stress hormones flood a child’s body and brain, they alter the genes that manage the stress reactions, and reset the stress response to “high” for life.

ACE’s affects the persons inflammatory responses, increasing the risk of inflammation and thereby making it twice as likely to get cancer, heart disease, diabetes, migraines, irritable bowel disease, autoimmune diseases, depression and gluten sensitivity as an adult.
