The sympathetic (SNS) and parasympathetic (PNS) systems are two parts of the autonomic nervous system, originating from the spinal column. The SNS is stimulated for a person to speed up, and the PNS functions are intended to decelerate the body.
When the SNS is activated it: prepares the body for action; all of the organs involved get ready for a physical challenge (“fight”) or prepare to retreat (“flight”). Stresses such as threat, injury, impending danger, a situation, event, trauma, chronic disease, stress as well as daily stressors such as – work deadlines, phones ringing and being pulled in many directions all place our bodies into the SNS. This causes muscles to contract; heart rate to increase, saliva production to reduce, digestive system to shut down, can result in cold sores, nervousness, sweats and anxiety. Remaining in SNS for extended times can result in – advanced adrenal fatigue, chronic low energy levels, respiratory problems and decreased sexual function.
When the PNS is activated it: causes muscles to relax, heart rate to decrease, digestive enzymes to be released, improved digestion, and is designed to maintain long-term health, conserve energy, restoring calm, and allowing the body to rest, relax and repair.
You can activate the PNS by: SCENAR Treatment, start a hobby, read a book, hot bath, petting your animals, social engagements, some light exercise, grounding, walking in nature and techniques such as yoga, Tai Chi, Pilates, deep breathing, meditation or massage.
