Alzheimer’s disease (AD) the most common cause of dementia, and “Type 3 diabetes” represents a form of diabetes selectively involving the brain – with molecular and biochemical features similar to both type 1 & type 2 diabetes. Type 3 diabetes occurs when neurons in the brain are unable to respond to insulin.
Some researchers believe insulin deficiency is central to cognitive decline. One study found people using
antiperspirants and antacids containing aluminium are at higher risk, due to the link between aluminium exposure and AD. When a person has Alzheimer’s, the brain has fewer healthy cells, and the brain cells form two types of flaws:
– Neurofibrillary tangles – twisted fibres inside brain cells preventing nutrients and other
important things from moving within and between cells
– Beta-amyloid plaques – sticky clumps of proteins building up between nerve cells
instead of breaking down like healthy brains.
Tangles and Plaques damage the healthy brain cells surrounding them, causing them to die and the brain to shrink –resulting in memory loss, speech problems, confusion, mood swings, & decreased ability to make judgements. Brain cells affected make lower amounts of neurotransmitters, which are used by nerves to send messages to each other.
Risks: Age – after 65; Gender – more women; Family history – parent or sibling with AD then more likely to get it; Down syndrome – often get AD in their 30’s and 40’s; Head injury – link between AD & major head injury; High cholesterol & High Blood Pressure
Steps towards Prevention:
– Exercise 4 times a week – 30 minutes per day, gentle walking
– Eat healthy foods – coconut oil , fresh foods, Reduce processed Sugars
– Healthy Weight, Lover Cholesterol and Reduce Blood Pressure
– Stop Smoking
