The TGA is advising that several ranitidine-containing products have been removed from the Australian market due to contamination with an impurity called N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA). Zantac and various generic brands containing Ranitidine used to reduce stomach acid, heartburn, reflux and ulcers have been recalled. The drug has been found to contain NDMA and 75% of ranitidine drugs tested by the Australian regulator were found to contain heightened levels of NDMA. NDMA is also found in low levels in foods such as smoked and cured meats and long-term exposure can increase an individual’s risk of developing cancer.
The TGA has been investigating NDMA and found N-nitroso compounds are also in ‘sartan’ blood pressure medicines; this is medication that ends in ‘sartan, and includes valsartan, irbesartan, candesartan, losartan and olmesartan.
French drug-maker Sanofi recently announced a recall of the over the counter Zantec – which has been linked to cancer in animals and poses a more serious health risk than initially reported. A 2004 study of people with peptic ulcers found that those who were taking either Zantac or another antacid, Tagamet (cimetidine), had a heightened risk of bladder cancer “We think the problem is much worse than contamination,” says Valisure CEO David Light. This has been known since 2004 yet still sold.
There are many other natural and complimentary choices that DO NOT possess this risk or create Harm.
