In today’s world we move less, sit longer, are less active, more sedentary, play less sport and watch more TV.
Sitting for 8 hrs a today whether at work, watching TV, eating or commuting, may be linked to many health issues such as: obesity, increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, abnormal cholesterol levels, increase the risk of death from cardiovascular disease, blood clots, stroke, diabetes, higher risk of colorectal, endometrial, ovarian and prostate cancer and one’s mental health.
Other adverse effects on the body may low energy, slow metabolism, effect posture, create Back and spine injuries and chronic pain. Australian researchers who looked at TV watching specifically, stated that “Every single hour of TV viewed may shorten life by as much as 22 minutes. However, data from more than 1 million people found that 60 to 75 minutes of moderately intense physical activity a day could counter these effects. Physical activity helps to maintain muscle tone, flexibility and mental well-being, especially as you age.
What to do:
Get up, move around, take short walks;
Take a break from sitting every 30 mins;
Stand rather than sit for a period of time
In your Chair:
Lift your legs up and down;
Put books on your legs and lift;
Put your hands under your body and push up and down;
Arm stretches
Eye exercise – follow the clock and stop for 5 secs at each number
We’re just beginning to understand the sitting disease, but what we already know suggests that modern society is making us quite sick.
